The Isle of Light

Delivered by W Bro Dr Manoj Sharma, PAGStB, The Isle of Light explores the origins and development of Freemasonry in the Eastern Archipelago, revealing how the Craft became intertwined with the growth of ports, commerce, empire and society across the region. In recognition of almost 220 years of Freemasonry in the Eastern Archipelago, the lecture pays particular tribute to the central role of Penang in that remarkable story.

Far more than a historical presentation, The Isle of Light examines the successes, failures and turning points that shaped our lodges, drawing lessons that remain relevant to Freemasonry today. It is equally accessible to non-Masons, making it an ideal introduction for spouses, partners, family members, friends and prospective candidates interested in understanding the history, values and traditions of the Craft.

This distinguished lecture series has already been enthusiastically received in Penang, hosted by Neptune Lodge No. 9849 E.C., and in Bangkok, hosted by Chula Lodge No. 9745 E.C. Brethren described the presentation as ‘engaging’, ‘enlightening’, ‘fascinating’, and ‘thought-provoking’, with many commenting that the hour passed too quickly and requesting an extended follow-up lecture.

The evening will also mark the election of the 124th Worshipful Master of Lodge St Michael, as the Lodge prepares to celebrate its 125th Anniversary, a significant milestone in the history of one of the world’s oldest research lodges.

Following the lecture, brethren, ladies and guests are invited to continue the fellowship at a Ladies’ Dining Evening at Harvest & Cellar, 359 Upper Paya Lebar Road, featuring a sumptuous buffet and wines specially arranged by the Junior Warden.
